Complimentary airport lounge access is easy to notice and easy to overvalue. The number of visits is only one part of the benefit. Eligibility rules decide whether those visits are available when you actually travel.
Start with the spending condition
Some cards require a minimum spend in the previous month or calendar quarter before a lounge visit becomes complimentary. Check the measurement period, eligible transactions and the date on which access becomes active.
Separate domestic and international access
Domestic lounge access and international programmes may have different limits, networks and enrolment requirements. A Priority Pass membership, for example, does not always mean every visit is free. Guest visits may also be charged separately.
Check the reset period
Four visits per year could mean one per quarter rather than four at any time. An unused quarterly visit may not carry forward. Match the reset schedule to when you expect to travel.
Confirm the participating lounge
Networks and terminals can change. Verify the current eligible-lounge list before a trip, especially when an airport has multiple terminals. Carry a backup payment option in case the programme or terminal is temporarily unavailable.
Put a realistic value on the perk
Use the amount you would genuinely pay for lounge access—not the highest advertised walk-in price. Then subtract the effort and spending needed to unlock it. For occasional travellers, a lower-fee card with fewer visits may provide better value than a premium card with a long benefit list.
